A Dragon’s Tale….

For those of you who have read my Silver Lake series, you will be familiar with the Silver Lake dragon.

The dragon is “born” in the pages of the first book in the series, Stronger Within, when Lori draws it for Jake as a gift.

“Will you sign it?” asked Jake, immediately embarrassed for asking.

With a smile Lori autographed the piece with her distinctive Mz Hyde signature and passed it back to him. “If the band wants to use it, I’m ok with that. If you want to use it as a beer mat, I could get upset,” she joked lightly.

It’s mentioned in every book in the series in a different guise.

In reality, the original drawing of the Silver Lake dragon (she doesn’t have a name as yet) was gifted to me by a very talented, special artist friend of mine, Fiona Knox, to say “thank you” for taking her to see Slash ft Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators live in concert in Glasgow at the end of 2014. (There’s a whole other rock n roll story there but that’s one for another day.)

The original drawing has been framed and hangs in my hallway. It’s very much admired. Me- well, I love it to bits!

The dragon first appeared on the cover of Stronger Within in April 2015.

She made a second appearance in February 2016 on the cover of Impossible Depths – well part of her did!

In April 2017, the dragon made her third appearance. This time it was on the cover of the third book in the series, Bonded Souls.

Around this time, it was also transformed into a limited edition pin by Lost Girl Creations.

And also a limited edition guitar pick.

Then last December, when Shattered Hearts was launched, the dragon featured again on the cover.

And, yes, when the final book in the series comes out in 2021, she will be there again somewhere.

The Silver Lake dragon really is at the heart of my creative journey. To me, she symbolises the dream coming true. She represents all the hours spent writing, typing, spellchecking, proofreading and editing. She’s the visual representation of my “book babies”. I could waffle on for hours but you get the hint.

She’s also a symbol of  love and friendship.

Last weekend, the Silver Lake dragon was recreated once more. Immortalised forever as a part of me.

Yes, I am now the indieauthor with the dragon tattoo! 😉

Which Colour Is Music To You?….

music-is-like-creating-an-emotional-painting-the-sounds-are-the-colors-quote-1

Anyone who reads this blog regularly or my sister blog, The 525 to Glasgow ( https://the525toglasgow.wordpress.com ) knows I love music.

I listen to hours and hours of music every week. I write with music playing in the background.

Last Saturday evening was no different-  except I decided to play this one old school…..

There really is something satisfying about placing that vinyl on the turntable, listening for that click as the stylus connects and then letting the magic unfold…..

My evening’s listening proved to be colourful.

20191026_19184220191026_21255320191026_21275720191026_21431120191026_22330620191026_22340320191026_22350420191026_223652

and who said vinyl had to be black?

Looks like my vinyl collection certainly adds some colour 😉

Eeny Meeny Miny Moe…….

For the past few weeks there’s been a small bundle of clean laundry that hasn’t found a home each Sunday when I put the ironing away. It has sat on top of my chest of drawers patiently waiting….

I knew in my heart of hearts that the time had come…..again! In preparation, I invested in a plastic storage box, a bigger one than the last one I bought.

Last night another shirt was added to the pile….. Yes, you’ve guessed it – the drawer where I store my band T-shirts  was full…again!

As I opened it, and several made a bid to escape, I began to wonder how many I have actually bought in recent years? ( I don’t want to contemplate the amount of money I’ve spent on them!)

The question hung in the air as I emptied the drawer. I also retrieved the first small storage box from the wardrobe and decided to lay them all out on the bed.

After a few minutes I came to the conclusion that I need a bigger bed!

I’ll admit there are actually a couple missing – not too sure where they are hiding. Also, all my “old”  pre-children gig shirts are MIA. I suspect they may be safely stored in a holdall in Boy Child’s cupboard.

As I laid out each shirt, I smiled as I remembered the show or a specific moment in the show or the people I was that night.

Each and every one of them hold precious musical memories.

Sorting through them wasn’t easy. How do you decide which ones go in the box and which ones go back in the drawer?

It reminded me of the scene from Toy Story where Woody got “shelved.”

Maybe I needed an extra set of drawers as well as a bigger bed? Common sense prevailed- rather than an emergency trip to IKEA, I sorted through them, leaving room in the larger of the two storage boxes to store more in future.

I also left space in the drawer for new additions….. well, 2018 is shaping up to be a great year for gigs! 😉

Oh, and if you were wondering, I counted 80 shirts give or take one or two (OK, I lost count!)

A week of reflection….

Back at the end of Dec 2013 I set myself the challenge of posting one blog post each week. It’s a challenge I’ve risen to and, to date, I’ve posted something every week.

This week I’m struggling to find words to post that don’t trivialise the tragic events of the past few days.

Invariably when I seek solace I turn to music and lose myself in the lyrics.

So this week’s blog is song that I’ve sought solace in many times.

Some of you may take the time to play the video link below.

Some of you may prefer to read the lyrics  like a poem so I’ve added them below too.

Blackbird

The willow it weeps today
A breeze from the distance is calling your name
Unfurl your black wings and wait
Across the horizon it’s coming to sweep you away
It’s coming to sweep you away
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
The fragile cannot endure
The wrecked and the jaded a place so impure
The static of this cruel world
Cause some birds to fly long before they’ve seen their day
Long before they’ve seen their day
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you’ve known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again
Ascend may you find no resistance
Know that you made such a difference
All you
Ascend may you find no resistance
Know that you made such a difference
All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you again
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you’ve known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again
May you never be broken again

You’ve Got Sixty Minutes…..clock’s ticking…

The challenge- you get offered the opportunity to host your own sixty  minute radio show to play ten of your favourite tunes, songs that reflect you musical tastes and who you are.

Sound easy?

In theory it is. If like me you listen to music  on a daily basis then you may already have several playlists set up on your iPod. In reality, its much harder.

Try it…go on…pick just ten songs.

Personally, my favourites can very depending on my mood so choosing a mere ten tracks from the thousands in my music library is far from easy.

So, trying not to over think this, if I was  to host said show today this,  in no particular order, would be the playlist –

1- Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns n Roses

2 – Ghost by Massive

3-Ghosts Of Days Gone By by Alter Bridge

4- The Rambler by Black Stone Cherry

5- Where I’ve Been by Rival Sons

6- I’m Not An Angel- Halestorm

7- Simple Man by Shinedown

8- La Mano De Lucifer – Crobot

9- God & Satan by Biffy Clyro

10- Eden – The Mayfield Four

Ask me again tomorrow and the selection could look completely different!

As Staycation 2016 draws to a close….time to reflect

BeFunky Collage 1

OK a bit of a cheat’s post but I’m sure you’ll forgive me.

The above collage sums up Staycation 2016 – bare feet, coffee, cinnamon bagels, writing, some typing (yes, I’ve begun the typing marathon that will become Bonded Souls …eventually!), a couple of cocktails, some photography, some great live music and , of course, several pairs of Converse!
